Who Am I

My name is Richard Parry and I am 44 years old. I have been practising and enjoying Choi Kwang Do for almost 20 years now. I qualified as a Chief Instructor in 1999 and in June this year I reached my Third Degree and am now Sam Dan (third degree) black belt, Chief Instructor and Associate Examiner.

I have trained several times with Grandmaster Choi, most recently May 2010.

Why did I take up CKD?

I discovered Choi Kwang Do in February 1992. I wanted to learn a martial art to boost my self confidence. I looked in the local paper and I found the Orpington school for CKD and joined! For me CKD was exactly what I wanted, a martial art that wasn’t regimented, was easy to learn in a friendly atmosphere which didn’t feel intimidating.

Eventually I got my children to go too and now my son is an assistant instructor and black belt.

Why teach Choi Kwang Do?

To help people improve their fitness and health, help them de-stress with a martial art that won’t damage their health with it’s moderate intensity training and not the harsher, lockout movements of other martial arts. My training is geared to the needs of individual students, not a one size fits all approach. CKD is also about self defence so students can defend themselves if they are ever in a situation when they need it, I know students who have put their CKD training to use in attack situations. It is very satisfying to know that I have helped improve people’s lives through Choi Kwang Do.

I am a member of Member of Cobra Martial Arts, a national supporting body for martial arts in the UK and on the Black belt register. I have a current Enhanced CRB check, up to date emergency first aid training, Child Protection Training and am fully insured.
